Russell Elementary School Student Council
The purpose of the Council is:
to give students a formal voice at the school;
to introduce ideas and voice concerns to the staff and the school board;
to give students the chance to learn parliamentary procedures of government.
In the beginning of the school year, we will be running campaigns for Student Council officers: President, Secretary, and Treasurers. Student will self-nominate with me, make posters, and prepare a short speech to share with the school at a morning assembly.
After the whole school elects the three officers, grades 5 – 8 will hold individual in class election for class representatives to the Student Council. Terms will be for the entire year, and special elections held for any vacancies that arise.
Grades k-4 will be kept in the loop, but through a class liaison, not elected members attending regular meetings.
Lunchtime meetings will be held at least once per month on Thursdays.
The first Council meeting will be dedicated to reviewing an introductory version of Roberts Rules and to understanding roles of the officers.
I am confident that this Student Council will have a lot of good ideas to discuss. There are many students at RES that will thrive in an organized leadership role. This Council will give them a great chance for productive learning and discussion. I look forward to advising this future group of young leaders.
